Low estrogen levels destroy tendons ?! Is this a true ?
A few articles are claiming that having low estrogen levels destroy tendons. I was interested to see what the recent evidence suggests.
Low estrogen levels can negatively affect tendon health, but "destroy" is not entirely accurate. Estrogen plays a role in maintaining tendon structure and function, and low levels can contribute to tendon issues. Here's how low estrogen might affect tendons:
Reduced Collagen Production- Estrogen helps regulate collagen synthesis, a key component of tendons. Lower levels of estrogen may reduce collagen production, leading to weakened tendon structure.
Decreased Tendon Elasticity- Tendons need elasticity to handle the mechanical stress of movement. Low estrogen levels can decrease tendon flexibility, increasing the risk of injuries like tendinopathy or tendon tears.
Impaired Healing- Estrogen supports the body's repair mechanisms, including in tendons. With low estrogen, the healing process of tendon injuries may slow down.
This is why tendon injuries are more common in postmenopausal women or those with low estrogen conditions. However, low estrogen levels don't completely "destroy" tendons but make them more vulnerable to injury. Is this why we are seeing more injuries in peri-
Menopause ????
